Update ..........

I ran the above commands on my 3rd boot (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in which the nm-applet was listing the device as ethernet)

the usb-devices shows things have been bound properly ...

Code:
T:  Bus=01 Lev=02 Prnt=02 Port=04 Cnt=02 Dev#=  4 Spd=480 MxCh= 0
D:  Ver= 2.00 Cls=ef(misc ) Sub=02 Prot=01 MxPS=64 #Cfgs=  1
P:  Vendor=03f0 ProdID=421d Rev=00.00
S:  Manufacturer=Novatel Wireless, Inc.
S:  Product=HP lt2523 Mobile Broadband Device
S:  SerialNumber=359789040033051
C:  #Ifs= 7 Cfg#= 1 Atr=e0 MxPwr=500mA
I:  If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=option
I:  If#= 1 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=option
I:  If#= 2 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=option
I:  If#= 3 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=option
I:  If#= 4 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=option
I:  If#= 6 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=02(commc) Sub=06 Prot=00 Driver=qmi_wwan
I:  If#= 7 Alt= 1 #EPs= 2 Cls=0a(data ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=qmi_wwan

after running the command

systemctl restart NetworkManager.service

the nm-applet isn't listing the device at all !!!

I think you can restart the nm-applet process as well? My NetworkManager fu is a bit weak but you should look into the nm-cli options to see if NetworkManager itself is even seeing the adapter, let alone nm-applet.

Hi Good Morning,

i tried restarting network manager on both 14.04 and 16.04 ... but to no avail ... the usb-devices showing option and qmi_wwan drivers bound to the device as below ...

Code:
T:  Bus=01 Lev=02 Prnt=02 Port=04 Cnt=02 Dev#=  4 Spd=480 MxCh= 0
D:  Ver= 2.00 Cls=ef(misc ) Sub=02 Prot=01 MxPS=64 #Cfgs=  1
P:  Vendor=03f0 ProdID=421d Rev=00.00
S:  Manufacturer=Novatel Wireless, Inc.
S:  Product=HP lt2523 Mobile Broadband Device
S:  SerialNumber=359789040033051
C:  #Ifs= 7 Cfg#= 1 Atr=e0 MxPwr=500mA
I:  If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=option
I:  If#= 1 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=option
I:  If#= 2 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=option
I:  If#= 3 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=option
I:  If#= 4 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=option
I:  If#= 6 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=02(commc) Sub=06 Prot=00 Driver=qmi_wwan
I:  If#= 7 Alt= 1 #EPs= 2 Cls=0a(data ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=qmi_wwan

but the device is not showing up in 'nm-applet', manual 'network manager' or under 'ifconfig' as a wwan adapter.

:(

need help ... have come as far as the above device bound by the option and qmi-wwan drivers.

where from here ?

Run:

$ ls -lah /dev

I can't recall what it's supposed to look like at the top of my head but I'll probably recognize the device if I see it in /dev. My laptop is being used by a colleague so I wasn't able to get my hand on it yesterday for testing, but hope to have it back soon.

seems systemctl is not part of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS ... returns the following ...

Code:
15:~$ sudo systemctl list-unit-files --type=service --no-pager | grep ModemManager
[sudo] password for xxx:
sudo: systemctl: command not found

any other way(systemctl) i can run the command you want an output for ?

14.04 uses upstart which makes things a little difficult. Try:

sudo initctl list | awk '{ print $1 }' | xargs -n1 initctl show-config

sudo service --status-all

Ok so it shows modemmanager but I'm not sure if it's running. You need to figure out if modemmanager is running and if it isn't start/enable it.

i don't know if it was already running ... i ran the following ...

Code:
15:~$ sudo restart modemmanager
modemmanager start/running, process 19065

any diagnostic commands to run now that its running as process 19065 ?
