Hello everyone,

I have a Huawei E397 (or more specifically E397u-53) wireless modem that I can't get to function properly on my Ubuntu 16.04 laptop.

Sometimes it does get recognized in which case I can connect to the internet with no issues. But then if I restart my machine, I can't see it anymore... I can't even reproduce the steps that make it work.

I uninstalled the default usb-modeswitch that comes with linux, downloaded and installed the newest (2.5) source together with its latest data, and it's still the same.

Last time it worked when I ran the following commands:

Code:
usb_modeswitch -W -v 12d1 -p 1506 -n –-message-content 555342437f0000000002000080000a11062000000000000100000000000000
modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1506

I re-connected the device and it was automatically detected. Then I pasted those two lines in /etc/rc.local, rebooted and the modem was still there. I thought the problem was solved... But now I can't even make it happen by manually re-executing these commands.

It's driving me a little bit nuts. I hope someone can help me... I don't care if I have to manually make it happen everytime, but at least make it happen everytime I want.

This is the line produced by executing lsusb:

Code:
Bus 002 Device 011: ID 12d1:1506 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. Modem/Networkcard

12d1:1506 is the usb id after the dongle has been successfully switched by usb_modeswitch.
Your connection problems are therefore not related to usb_modeswitch which only does the mode switching.

Cbruguera,
I have the same modem and am trying to get it to work with Xubuntu 16.10 and GalliumOS 2.0.
Check your dmesg. It appears to modeswitch correctly. On my Xubuntu system, usbserial and usbcore recognize the device, attach it with the QMI driver, and give it a tty port under /dev. However, it doesn't create the actual network interface.

Please post here if you find a solution.
