Huawei E220

Post by yclin » 21 Dec 2012, 08:00

E220 could be drived by PPPwidget and dialing out is successful to connect to the 3G. (singal shows connected on the device as well)
But there just no data transmitted thoroughout the modem.
Don't know what's going on there.
Here's the PPPwidget log and plz give me some advice.
Thanks.

That is strange indeed. The log looks just fine.

Do you get a WiFi indicator when connected?

Do you get "not connected" error messages from the Google apps?
Also, did you test the connection with an alternative browser like Opera?

Hi, I have trouble with e220 too, just a bit different.

in 'mobile partner' settings for o2 ireland are:
apn: dynamic (empty)
access number: *99#
no user and no pass.

i tried to use default settings for ppp on my nexus7 and set 'internet' as apn.
please find a log below:

Your data says "APN: empty".

Did you try to leave it blank?

Josh, I did try to remove the OK-AT-OK $MYAPN line from gprs-chat.

Same results

Sometimes, the user and password is better not left empty. Try entering any random string for both, like "mm" or "tx", doesn't matter.

You don't have to edit gprs-chat. Just leave the APN entry blank.

Josh,
I tried to leave the apn blank, but it does not allow me to. Looks like apn is required for gprs.
Tried to use random pass, but looks the same:

If the modem is waiting for the network then it will usually respond to each sent msg from the client, there will be a rcvd line for each sent line. (see domy's log a few posts up)
This long row of send without any reply looks like the modem has disappeared, maybe got reset because of a USB voltage drop when it starts to communicate with the cell tower.
Keep in mind that the ppp server is internal in the 3G modem and that the ppp client only talks to that server, the modem does not have a ppp connection to the mobile network.
It uses other protocols to log in to the network and get the ip addresses.

LOM,

Thanks! I will try to investigate this, though I did try to use an external power source already, but maybe I did this the wrong way - I tried to use a laptop's USB socket.

Hmm, I don't think the log hints at a problem with the modem port.
pppd would notice problems writing to the port, but it doesn't in this case.

I see two possible issues:
Either no network or a wrong APN.

ultrabeet, did you try other APNs ? I googled and found at least two others apart from "internet"

For an empty APN to be permitted, the dial string has to be different from *99***1#.
The "1" tells the modem to use profile 1 which is set by the previous APN command. That does not make sense with an empty APN, so you can just chage the dial string to *99#.

Josh,

I finally got it working!
You were right, it was the APN.

If anybody has problems connecting to O2 Ireland, use settings as per below:

Dialing string: *99#
APN: open.internet
USER: (blank)
PASS: (blank)

Thank you very much guys!

yclin,

Do you have any firewalls or other apps related to security?
If you do, maybe your access rules do not allow any traffic for that subnet.
