Nexus 7 + K3806Z ZTE (Vodafone) non working with 1.2.9
Hi,
I have a Nexus 7 and a K3806Z and I've tried 1.2.8 and 1.2.9 releases with no luck.
With 1.2.8:
I connect the 3G USB, the device flashes in red and I press PPP icon and select the ZTE device. PPP says that "Device not found" and after a while, the light in the 3G USB changes into blue (saying that 3G network is available). In the USB logging I got all usual stuff for the USB connection without problems (very similar to http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswit ... f=6&t=1257) .
With new 1.2.9:
I plug 3G module, select "19d2:1013 (Vodafone (ZTE))" in the "Choose available USB device" question and after four / fives seconds I get the same "choose available USB device" dialog. No log, no more changes in the lightsas the device flashes in red forever.
I have rebooted the whole nexus after 1.2.9 installation and the 3G USB works under Windows perfectly (I can try with Ubuntu also if needed).
Any idea that may help, please? Thanks!
Raul

Re: Nexus 7 + K3806Z ZTE (Vodafone) non working with 1.2.9
Is there a reason why you disabled automatic device detection in the config page?
Re: Nexus 7 + K3806Z ZTE (Vodafone) non working with 1.2.9
I did it while troubleshooting. I'm testing without it.

Red flash light, and always "Preparando Device" in spanish (I suppose in english should be configuring". While now, many minutes this way. PPP Widgets is not responsive if I try to press any button.
Even if I unplug the 3G USB, PPP Widget still hanged in "configuring".

Hmm, without a USB log it's hard to determine where the problem is ...
If you see "Preparing" then the modem should be handled by the mode-switching tool and a log should be started if the "Logging" option is enabled ...

Could be possible if you sent me the previous release so I can "play" with both? As I updated thought Play Store, I lost access to 1.2.8 in order to keep testing...
Thanks again, Josh!

Re: Nexus 7 + K3806Z ZTE (Vodafone) non working with 1.2.9
Hi, more tests...
Maybe there is a problem with the adapter (or I'm getting older... ) . I've tried on a Mint Linux, without success. Last time I tried in Linux with another 3G modem, it worked without problems...
I plug in the ZTE, and after some time, the light goes blue (3G network available), linux recognizes the card and tries to connect but it fails. I don't an IP address and I have opportunity to modify anything. See the screenshot 3G mint attached and dmesg log.
Could you please advice? I don't have (yet) the opportunity to try with another adapter, but in Windows 7 is working flawlessly...
Thanks!

I have exactly the same config Nexus 7 with K3806Z and I had the same symptoms
I found the following tutorial to make this dongle to work and it was just the perfect solution .... now the 3g is working fine on my nexus7 (may working on other android tablets also)
Connect Vodafone Key K3806-Z to Android tablet
Basic requirements:
a. Android tablet rooted.
b. Android Terminal Emulator installed
c. PPP Widget Installed
d. Putty on Windows
Remove PIN
a. Connect the key to Pc, automatically start the Vodafone software
b. Go to Advanced -> Devices -> "PIN request" and uncheck "verify PIN"
Discover which COM port is used by the key
Go to Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Ports (COM & LPT): remember of which COM port is used by the key (Vodafone Mobile Broadband Secondary Port (ZTE)(COM7))
Block the key on the modem function.
a. connect the Vodafone Key to the PC
b. Run Putty
c. click on Serial
d. In the speed box write 460800
e. In the serial line box, write COM7
f. Click on the button Open
A terminal will open and type these commands:
i. ATE (result must be OK)
ii. AT%USBMODEM=0 (result must be [0] MODEM DRIVER)
iii. close the terminal
Configuration of the key
a. Connect the Vodafone Key to the tablet
b. Run Android Terminal emulator
c. type su (enter)
d. type echo "19d2 1014" > /sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/option1/new_id (enter)
Configuration of PPP Widget
a. Go to configure
b. Modify the access point with web.omnitel.it
Connect the Vodafone Key to Internet
Click on Connect on PPP Widget
this tutorial can be found at this link:
http://ingignux.blogspot.hu/2012/12/con ... droid.html
The only difference what I made is to change the access point name to: internet.vodafone.net /i'm in Hungary/ ( i guess omnitel is working only in Italy ) it is maybe different in some other countries too.
And as the Pin code was disabled earlier, the Pin number is not needed to set in the PPP Widget setting either.
By the way disabling the secondary port on the USB dongle is the key to use this 3g stick in other Linux systems too ....after disablement the dongle is working both in Windows7 and on Red Hat Linux (RHEL6.2) as well. I don't know what is the secondary port is used for in Windows but the data connection is working only on the primary port (the secondary maybe is used for voice and SMS connection but i couldn't clarify until now) ... so it is just working fine for 3g connection both on Win , Linux and Android now.
I hope I could help to make your 3g working as well
Re: Nexus 7 + K3806Z ZTE (Vodafone) non working with 1.2.9
marki81,
this all should really not be necessary ...
I ran into a strange problem just recently with my newest modem, Huawei E303 which behaved erratically even when connected to a powered hub.
It turned out that there were power suspend issues involved - the USB port suspended power during the mode switch of the device (the "Preparing" phase), obviously finding no device for a moment and going into powersave mode.
Try to use the latest update of PPP Widget and activate "Disable USB Power Suspend" in the configuration page.
You might have to unplug the OTG cable for a moment, and remove and re-place PPP Widget to make the setting active.

Re: Nexus 7 + K3806Z ZTE (Vodafone) non working with 1.2.9
Agreed, K3806-Z is an acm type device with very well defined acm interfaces when using the switch msg in usb_modeswitch.Josh wrote:marki81,

Removing one interface gives the stick a different mode with a different id which they now use the option driver for.
This stick is intentionally excluded from option driver support because it should be used in acm mode.
