Bad news for Nexus 10 owners on Android 4.3 (new Nexus7 too)

Post by Josh » 08 Aug 2013, 21:10

I just wanted to create a new set of modules for the Nexus 10 on kernel 3.4.39 (coming with Android 4.3).

I am confident that I have the correct kernel configuration; unfortunately I discovered that module loading was entirely disabled in that kernel !!

If this is true for the kernel that is actually on the device, then any further extension of that kernel - by adding modules for new features and device support - is impossible.

Can anyone check if there are any modules on the Nexus 10 with Android 4.3 ?

I just had a look on my Nexus 7 and could not find any. However, the difference to the Nexus 10 is that the modem drivers are compiled into the kernel.

If all that turns out to be reality, then there is no way of using 3G USB sticks or phones on the Nexus 10 with the stock kernel of 4.3 !!

I regret that I can install the update 4.3. On 4.2.2. everything worked perfectly.
Now set 4.3, made ROOT,wait out ppp widget 1.3.3 - all in vain.
Do not want to return 4.2.

See if there is one or more of the followíng folders:

/lib/modules

/system/modules

/system/lib/modules

No directory "modules" in this paths
Only one: /sys/module

Bad news...

Are there any files in it? With extension ".ko"?

No, forget that. This is of course the 'virtual' file system which gives access to all kinds of kernel attributes.

There are no real files in there.

Is all the source to PPP Widget available? Why dont we try and get a kernel dev to help us, like Franco.

There is a misunderstanding: PPP Widget is not the problem - the kernel is.

If someone wants to use a USB device and the driver is not compiled in the Nexus kernel, the only way to do it is to install a custom kernel. This is possible of course - but it is not as simple as copying some modules into a folder.

r00t4rd3d,

I'm using only the stock kernels on all my devices, because I want to get PPP Widget running without modification to the system.

I've updated my Nexus 7 to Android 4.3 to fix the PPP Widget problem with that version. It went well, but only because the required USB and PPP drivers are embedded into the kernel by default - unlike on the Nexus 10 ...

Nexus 7 owners never had to use additional drivers for 3G modems so far.

But if the message is "preparing" is driver problem?
