Dell Wireless 5809e Gobi 4G LTE on Android x86

Post by joprst » 28 Apr 2016, 01:39

Hi, I'm trying to use the builtin 4G radio on my Dell Rugged Tablet with x86 android clone. I am able to make /dev/ttyUSB0, 1 and 2 devices appear with qcserial module and basic AT commands work on ttyUSB2.

For some reason the ppp Widget 2 does not seem to like what it sees. In USB log I get the following:

Device manufacturer string: Dell Inc.
Start search for USB devices
visible on Android OS level ...
Check device 413c:81b1, iface 0, class 2
No known 3G USB device found
Search complete, no useable USB devices found.

This means that ppp widget senses the hardware but for some reason decides not to use it.

I would like to contribute to make my device supported. I can compile, debug, figure out AT commands and such. I have Ubuntu successfully connecting with 3G on the same tablet. Please let me know what information you require to make it work.

Roman.

A while ago, I would have just replied that your internal modem does not have PPP ports and consequently would not work with PPP Widget 2.

As it happens, I now have a largely improved version in my lab which can be beta-tested via Google Play. It might recognize your modem and work with it.

I found this interesting article about your device

... which tells me it just might work after a little tweak described here:

The latter thing with the "FCC auth" is not yet implemented in the test version, so connecting will not work.

I have added the "FCC Auth" step. If there are no other particularities, your modem might be able to connect with the beta version.
