USB_ModeSwitch

Got me a EeePC plus Q101 on top of my UMTS-SIM from TWMOBILE.

In the stick's memory there is a .deb with it seems all the things needed to run it under (at least xandros) linux.

things like udev.d entries mentioning 'eject -s %d'.
When I did a lsusb; eject -s /dev/sdb; lsusb, the product id of Q101 switched like this:

Very interesting!

I've looked up the "eject" command and it's included in all major distributions. The package is named explicitly "eject".

This might help with some stubborn devices that use the SCSI eject command (like the Novatel / Ovation sticks).

If there is some provider-specific information contained in that Debian package I'm sure someone will find it useful. Otherwise your command sequence should do.

I just bought a Quanta 3G modem, although it's a different model (vendor 0408, product f001 as storage, ea02-04 as modem). Mine was marketed by Telkomsel (phone network) model SU-8500U in Indonesia. I thought I would avoid a lot of trouble by upgrading to 9.10 with the 2.6.31 kernel first, but I now know I was wrong.

I wonder if you've tried your modem with the recent kernel, and if you were able to get it to work. Like yours, mine came with a couple of .deb packages, but they didn't install properly/completely, and seemed to have at least a few bugs in them. I didn't use them, and hoped that the new practices in 2.6.31, and usb_modeswitch, would be enough, but no luck so far. In fact, I've bricked the thing at the moment, so that I can no longer use it in Windows!

Any help gratefully appreciated.
