I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" GT-P3100
Android version
4.1.1 and
Kernel version
3.0.31-471788
se.infra@SEP - 131 #1
SMP PREEMPT Mon Dec 3 20:49:31
KST 2012.
I updated from the prevous set up which was as follows :-
Android version
4.0.4 and
Kernel version
3.0.8-1060938
dpi@HP25 #1
SMP PREEMPT Fri Aug 24 11:33:25
KST 2012.
With the Ice cream sandwich version, I was able to browse the net using the PPP Widget.
By the way, I use a ZTE CDMA datacard , model AC-2736.
However, now I am again stuck. When I connect the same data card, the widget displays the three following texts, "Prepare device", "Search for port" and finally "Port wasn't found."
Josua, does this mean I need another new set of drivers?

Every time your kernel changes, you need matching modules.
Let me see what I can do.

Apologies Josh, but I have been travelling the past couple of days and I seem to have left my OTG cable behind. I shall be able to check if it works only this evening.
Thanks so much for your effort.
One question. I could not find the driver module zip file for the Kernel version 3.0.31-471788. Does that mean I should use the one for the version 3.0.31-140615?

Hello Josh,
First of all thank you for your efforts. I have P3100 with kernel version 3.0.31-471788. I downloaded the driver that you submitted in driver module section for P3100. But that did not work. However, it was compiled only 3.0.31 and also the name of the zip file indicates P3110 instead of P3100.
I know a bit of kernel compilation. I downloaded the JB-Update2 version from opensamsung site. Compiled it as said in the readme but getting Exec format error and dmesg says module disagrees. Can you please provide me the config file that you are using or can you tell me what are the other modifications needed apart from the defconfig.

The configuration that Samsung managed to fix is only good for the GT-P311x / GT-P511x tablets.
The "module_layout" checksum is different for the GT-P3100.
Unfortunately, the source package download pages at Samsung don't even show a release date, but I just checked and I have tried the Update2 already. No good.
If you are compiling yourself, I recommend to use the toolchain that Samsung suggests (CodeSourcery 2010q1). Also note that you have to compile modules with the compiler flag "no-pic" ('make CFLAGS_MODULE=-fno-pic ... ').
To check if the compiled modules are compatible, compare them to the ones on the device. A good candidate is "scsi_wait_scan.ko" in /lib/modules. You might see that folder only when on a "su" shell, via adb or on the device.
The same module is compiled by default from the source, in "drivers/scsi". Compare both versions by running

# modprobe --dump-modversions ./scsi_wait_scan.ko
on each of them (you can rename them at will).
All listed checksums have to match.
If you find a difference,
write to Samsung using the "Inquiry" button next to the download link. Tell them politely that they are required to provide the exact configuration used for the binary kernel that they are distributing in their firmware.
The issue with MODVERSIONS and the differing checksums has already been explained to them.

... some programs such as the Linux kernel tend to have compile-time configuration (in case of the Linux kernel the .config file). Since this compile-time configuration undoubtedly controls the process of compilation, you need to include any such compile-time configuration files, too.

I sent a inquiry mail to Samsung asking them the correct source code that I should use. I also attached my device info screenshot so that they can get all the info they have needed. They replied that since I bought the device in India, I should try to compile ICS_SWA source code. This what they said.

Currently I'm trying to download the source code and then I'll give it a try. However, my internet speed is quite slow, so it seems only tomorrow it will be possible

I'm not sure this makes sense. If you have kernel 3.0.31 you are most likely on Jelly Bean (Android 4.1/4.2), not on ICS (Android 4.0) ...
true I asked them on this. But did not get any reply after that. I'll again remind them on this..

Yaa.. I know this. I was actually saying that Samsung removed /proc/config which might again put them on risk.. Since they are violating the GPL license..

Dear Customer,
Sorry, I missed the Android version.
You could get the fixed source code at GT-P3100_SWA_JB_Opensource.zip
However, I already tried this version but with the some other compiler. In this source, the readme says to use arm-eabi-4.4.3 compiler but I'm not able to find this compiler. BUt it's a bit strange also because in other sources they recommend to use arm-none-linux-gnueabi- compiler.

I was not able to build working modules with the GNU compiler so I got myself the one that Samsung recommends in earlier READMEs. It is the toolchain from CodeSourcery, release 2010q1. The compiler included is arm-eabi-4.4.3 (I think). Anyway, it definitely works.
