Can you help me get my Huawei zte 637 working.
I have read the instructions, but I am new to
Ubuntu and dont understand everything.

I cant get the modeswitch.conf copied or extracted to root/etc folder.
I have modeswitch.d folder with many devices listed, among others
ZTE MF622, but I cant edit or add anything.
It says.
You don't have the right permissions to extract archives in the folder "file:///etc"

I should mention, that I am the author of this mashine, and I gave root and myself all permissions.

I asked it to look for my modem with the data you gave in your conf file.

c@c-laptop:~$ sudo usb_modeswitch -v 19d2 -p 2000

Hi Peter,

welcome and have a nice experience with your Ubuntu. Since you are doing a new installation of usb_modeswitch, do not bother with modeswitch.conf as it is the old way of using usb_modeswitch (which indeed required you to properly edit modeswitch.conf).

There is now a better way to install usb_modeswitch with more benefits:
* You do not need to edit any file for your modem to appear.
* Your system will be capable of recognizing any other 3G USB modem connected on your system, and not just ZTE 637.
This new mode is called "integrated" install.

To install usb_modeswitch using the new method, unplug your modem (if plugged) and try the following:

Code:
cd /tmp
wget "http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/usb_modeswitch-1.0.6.tar.bz2"
tar -xjvf usb_modeswitch-1.0.6.tar.bz2
cd usb_modeswitch-1.0.6
sudo modprobe -r -v usbserial
sudo make integrated_install

Now replug it. Wait a few seconds and issue lsusb. If everything is OK, no line with ID 19d2:2000 should appear. Then try:

Code:
ls -l /sys/bus/usb-serial/device

or,
Code:
ls -l /dev/ttyUSB*

If you can see ttyUSBx devices, then usb_modeswitch has finished its job for you. You now have to bother with Network Manager to create your 3G connection.

If no ttyUSBx entries appeared, do these:
1. Unplug your modem.
2. Issue the following commands, and leave terminal open:
Code:
sudo modprobe -r -v option
sudo modprobe -r -v usbserial
lsusb
lsmod | grep usb
tail -f /var/log/dmesg ; echo (and leave this terminal open)

3. Now plug your modem. Messages will appear in the terminal you have open.
4. Wait for 10 seconds, go to open terminal and press Ctrl+C.
5. Now type once more:
Code:
lsmod | grep usb
lsusb

6. Now paste all output (including step #2 output) to this forum for further investigation.

Sakis

PS: It is correct that you don't have access to /etc folder. Only root should be able to write/change things on /etc folder. If indeed you need to change things on /etc, on Ubuntu systems you need to prefix desired command with sudo. e.g. sudo cp /home/c/modeswitch.conf /etc. However, you now know you don't have to do it, right?

Nice try Sakis. And thanks for the welcome.

We encountered a minor problem here.
I am sitting in a cirkus waggon in an open field in the northern parts of Moldova. My internet connection is a well know (to Ubuntu) Huawei E160E. Works 2 - 3 Mb/s - OK!!

So in my first try I obviously got the reply after the modprobe command.

c@c-laptop:/tmp/usb_modeswitch-1.0.6$ sudo modprobe -r -v usbserial
[sudo] password for c:
FATAL: Module usbserial is in use.
c@c-laptop:/tmp/usb_modeswitch-1.0.6$ sudo modprobe -r -v usbserial
FATAL: Module usbserial is in use.
c@c-laptop:/tmp/usb_modeswitch-1.0.6$

Second rejection was after I unplucked my Huawei E160E.

Then I restarted the mashine without the modem, and off cause the tmp folder had gone.

Then I let it download the usb_modeswitch and removed the E160E and tried to unmount the CDrom1 in Media.

Though the folder was empty, it said.
umount: /media/cdrom1 mount disagrees with the fstab

Go get it guys....

Well, I copied the downloaded fil to another folder, unmounted my E160E and copied it back to tmp.
It worked some of the way. But in the end it bailed out. The code is for people smarter than I.

OK, it had been my mistake, actually twice. I am sorry about it.

You see, "make integrated_install" re-compiles usb_modeswitch. Compilation requires libusb development headers. Lets go the politically correct way, modifying installation procedure of my previous post.
1. While connected do:
Code:
sudo aptitude install libusb-dev
mkdir $HOME/src
cd $HOME/src
wget "http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/usb_modeswitch-1.0.6.tar.bz2"
tar -xjvf usb_modeswitch-1.0.6.tar.bz2
cd usb_modeswitch-1.0.6

2. Now unplug your modem and continue:
Code:
sudo modprobe -r -v usbserial
sudo make integrated_install

Installation should be now OK. Now resume instructions from my previous post: plug modem, do "lsusb" to see if "19d2:2000" is disappeared, do "ls" commands to see if device nodes have appear.

Hi Sakis.

We are proceding !!!

Again I had to restart the mashine to be able to unmount the E160E modem.

But the modeswitch was still in the folder §HOME/src.

When it came to the end, it was like something was missing. No answer, no promt ? When I tried to close Terminal after 10 minuttes, it said "processes still running" ??? I havent closed it yet, writing from another pc, but I had to unpluck my modem to send this message.

Preferably it should work together with the other dongles. I have a Danish wifi modem similar to the E160E and they can substitute one another without any change.

When I pluck those two, they are immidiately shown in the mobile network wizzard with their correct names.

This one still shows <any device>

Here is the code from after I restarted:

I am not 100 % sure, but I think I saw the ninth line from the bottom before I plucked the device. I think only the last 3 lines were added after plucking the modem.

I can try again if its important.

OK. Be pleased to know that you now have usb_modeswitch properly installed. Also, you may close all terminals you left open from previous attempts.

Do this sequence:
1. Unplug your modem.
2. sudo modprobe -r -v usbserial
3. Plug your modem.
4. Wait 5 seconds.
5. lsusb
6. lsmod | grep usb
7. dmesg
8. ls -l /dev/ttyUSB*
9. Post output of all commands above here.

Now some of my questions:
1. On your first post, you say your modem is ZTE MF 637. Later on, you refer to it as E160E. Which one of them is? Does it have sticker on it with its name?
2. On your dmesg of the previous post, appears a PCMCIA device. Do you connect the USB modem directly to the laptop? Or to a port replicator? Or to a docking station? Or to a USB port available through a PCMCIA card? Or is it an IBM laptop?

Yes I confused things.

I have a E160E modem, that works Out of the Box, but also sets footprints somewhere in fstab.
It is shown in Places under Computer as a CD device 1, though its not present.
CD drive 0 is only shown when it occupied with a disc. This is the modem
I use for communicating with you. If anything else fails, I can run your code on a
pc, thats never smelled any other modem. I have my waggon filled with virgin
mashines, waiting to do their job in the country villages administrations.
But half of these pcs will have to run this supposedly faster modem, Huawei
zte mf 637, which is not recognized by Ubuntu.
I am pretty sure of their datas. The zte 637 has 19d2 and 0031 as ID in Windows.

I pluck the modem directly into the usb port of my Dell Latitude 600. I am not aware of any pcmcia devices.

At first, I am not the author of usb_modeswitch, I am a user just like you. I was looking for something else, saw your post and thought about replying.

So, to sum up, you have many "virgin" Ubuntu machines. Half of them will be delivered together with a ZTE MF637, but your problem is that ZTE MF637 does not work on Ubuntu out of the box. Right?

So, in order to test what should be done in those Ubuntu systems, you test it by plugging it your own laptop (Dell), so that later you know what to do with those "virgin" machines. Right?

Those "virgin" machines. Only have Ubuntu, or they are dual-boot?

I think I've found the problem within your dmesg output:

Peter Fjelstrup wrote:

Try these:
1. Unplug your modem.
2. Enter those 3 commands (I have included "c@c-laptop:~$", so that you understand where each command ends):
Code:
c@c-laptop:~$ sudo modprobe -r -v usbserial
c@c-laptop:~$ sudo vi -c ".,$ s/SYSFS/ATTRS/g" -c ":wq" /etc/udev/rules.d/80-usb_modeswitch.rules
c@c-laptop:~$ if [ `which udevadm` ]; then sudo `which udevadm` control --reload-rules; elif [ `which udevcontrol` ]; then `which udevcontrol` reload_rules; fi

3. Now plug your modem.
4. Wait 5 seconds.
5. lsusb
6. lsmod | grep usb
7. dmesg
8. ls -l /dev/ttyUSB*
9. Post output of all commands above here.

I think it will now work.

I am sorry. Once again the dmesg cut the top of the terminal.
I will repet the test and send you the result in two parts.
Till then, you may use this.

The Subject titel is what is written on the modem.

I freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a formatted IBM R51. Then ran your last code and got the following response:

peter@peter-ibm:~$ sudo modprobe -r -v usbserial

peter@peter-ibm:~$ sudo vi -c ".,$ s/SYSFS/ATTRS/g" -c ":wq" /etc/udev/rules.d/80-usb_modeswitch.rules

peter@peter-ibm:~$ if [ `which udevadm` ]; then sudo `which udevadm` control --reload-rules; elif [ `which udevcontrol` ]; then `which udevcontrol` reload_rules; fi

peter@peter-ibm:~$ lsusb
