Viettel Dongle???

Post by jerseysal » 08 Feb 2016, 08:21

I am currently in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam in a tiny village. No wifi. So, I bought a Viettel dongle. I have no idea what is inside except that it has "E1588" on the main chip. The "Vendor ID" is 19d2. Okay so far. The Product id is 1592 when plugged into my Open Suse 13.2 with a 4.4 kernel. The dongle shows up as Product code 1595 on Winders 7 in a logman trace. I have dual boot. Then it turns to Product ID 1600. If i restart and force the Viettel app to close I can boot SuSe and use sakis3g to connect. as PID of 1600 If I unplug the dongle and replug it, lsusb shows it as Product ID 1592 and it is a mass storage device. There is a "linux driver" on the dongle, zte.c, and a udev rule that does not include any of the product ID's that I have seen. The zte.c will not compile in kernel 4.4xxx. I think that on winders, the dongle goes immediately to PID 1595 and from there is switched to 1600 which is communication mode. So, I have seen 3 states: 1592, mass storage, 1595, intermediate???, and 1600, communication mode. I did a "Logman" trace on winders but did not see the 1592 state at all.

I have tried various udev rules with no luck. I admit that I am working in the dark and with little scientific discipline. Here is the lsusb output: for 1592

I tried setting up usb_modeswitch as 1588 to 1600, 1592 to 1600 and 1595 to 1600 using the command sequences that I found in this forum for ZTE MF170 but no joy. I am trying to figure out what command sequence in the logman trace is germaine but winders is a pain in the nether regions; ergo, linux. I tried attaching the trace file in case one of you geniuses can suss out some meaningful information but this site doesn't like ".etl" files...
Any clues will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Viettel Dongle???

This is a ZTE MF710 dongle and it has dual modes, a WIN8 or later mode (19d2:1600) and a compatibility mode (19d2:1592) for WIN7/XP and for linux.

19d2:1595 is its initial mode from which it is switched but the dongle is most likely auto switching by sensing the type of OS it is run under.

The interface layouts for the two operational modes:

19d2:1592
MI_00 ZTE Mobile Broadband Network Adapter (cdc_ether)
MI_02 ZTE Modem Device
MI_03 ZTE UI AT Interface
MI_04 ZTE Voice Device
MI_05 ZTE Diagnostics Device
MI_06 USB Mass Storage Device

19d2:1600
MI_00 ZTE Mobile Broadband Network Adapter (cdc_mbim)
MI_02 ZTE Modem Device
MI_03 ZTE UI AT Interface
MI_04 ZTE Voice Device
MI_05 ZTE Diagnostics Device
MI_06 USB Mass Storage Device

You should see in your dmesg log that the dongle first appears at 19d2:1595, then disappears and reappears as 19d2:1592 after which communication drivers hooks into its interfaces. There should be some log lines for cdc_ether and there should be 4 ttyUSB devices created by the option driver for interfaces 2-5, ttyUSB0 representing the modem on interface #2, ttyUSB1 representing the AT cmd interface #3 and so on.

sakis3g is for ppp serial dialup and should work regardless of 1592 or 1600 id, both of them
has a ppp modem serial interface.
ppp serial modems has a speed limit of somewhere around 25-30Mbps, for higher speeds you must use the Network Adapter interface which needs some manual cmds before it can be used by linux NetworkManager. I don't think you have such high speeds in a Vietnam village so you can stick to ppp dialup.

Good info but I am running Windows 7 and the device starts as 1595 then switches to 1600. When I restart the pc to linux, without removing the dongle, it shows up as 1600 and sakis3g works, or at least it did until I pooched something. I gotta keep better notes. Anyway, I am at the point of screaming/crying and I have become OCD about washing my hands after booting winders. Otherwise, Happy Lunar New Year...

I would still love to get the provided driver, zte.c, to compile on the 4.4xxx kernel. Interestingly enough, the Viettel gui gets the dongle to "green light" without the zte driver being installed and I can check my balance, add money but not connect. The gui, probably, uses the "voice" ttyUSB while the connection is managed over another ttyUSB.

Thanks again, and I will post again when and if I get it working in a sane manner. BTW, do I need modeswitch entries and if so, what do they look like?

One more thing" in the 1592 state it is a storage device, also. I see a "/dev/sr1", ttyUSB0-3, sg2-3, and sdb(???).

and so it is also in 1600.
The virtual cdrom with windows drivers and communication manager among others is often present also after dongles has been switched and there is usually a TF/SD card reader in the dongles. Both of them are storage devices.

You don't use the 2 first interfaces which are direct ethernet interfaces, you use ppp dialup on the modem interface. The other 4 interfaces are identical between the two modes so it is therefore irrelevant for you how the dongle got switched, you dial up on interface #2 (= ttyUSB0) in both modes.

Thanks. Wondows 7 is different in that I can't see the storage when the device is "turned on"; not that it matters. The zte.c driver that came with the device is an old version written for the 2.6.16 kernel or there abouts. I am trying to bring it into line with the latest GCC specs and 4.4.1 kernel. It seems that the Powers That Be have tightened up some storage rules etc.
