I have an E397Bu-502 device that does not work on Fedora 24 but can be made to work by changing the 12d1:1505 file slightly.

original file:

That is probably a Fedora packaging problem, which usb_modeswitch version do they include in the distro?

the fedora 24 packages today are:

usb_modeswitch-data-20160612-3.fc24.noarch
usb_modeswitch-2.4.0-4.fc24.x86_64

so they are fairly up to date

What is it that doesn't work with the original switch method?
The modified message you are using is intended for Windows, the message hiding behind "HuaweiNewMode" is a message for Linux which Huawei has provided for us.

Please provide the relevant 20-25 lines (dongle detection and switching) from dmesg when using the original switch method and also a verbose lasusb listing for the device, both before and after switching.
