huawei e8372h-153 switching but not recognized as modem

Post by roeeklinger60 » 16 Oct 2019, 10:32

Hey guys,

I have recently bought a huawei e8372h-153, I followed this guide: https://gist.github.com/guseppiguliano/ ... 1439a03790

and everything worked just fined, when I unplugged and re plugged dmesg | fail -f gave something like "GSM modem connected ttyUSB..."

However, when I restarted my PC back to windows and then back to Ubuntu, the device is recognized as "USB mass storage" in dmgesg, but as a modem in lsusb (it successfully changes from 12d1:1f01 to 12d1:14dc in lsusb). No matter how many times I re plug it it says 12d1:1f01 in lsusb but 12d1:14dc and wvdial is unable to recognize it as a modem.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling usb-modeswitch and repeating the guide but dmesg still shows it as a USB device, lsusb as 12d1:14dc and wvdial doesn't recognize it.

Any ideas ?

I am running on a Lenovo usung Ubuntu 18.04.

Thanks !

Huawei E8372h is not a dial-up modem, it is a router with a wifi access point for up to 10 clients.
You can tether over usb to the LAN of this router where you get an ethernet-over-usb connection.

Thanks for the reply !

I actually didn't know that. How come I got a GSM modem from dmesg if it's not a modem ?

BTW which 4G Huawei modem do you recommend ? I am trying to set up a 4G proxy server with WVdial +Squid

4G is LTE Category 3 at minimum and dial-up modems can not fully utilize those speeds so most such modems do only have an ethernet-over-usb function.
Huawei E392, E397, E398 has both dial-up modem function and direct ethernet function, but they are old so probably difficult to find.

dial-up is so yesterday, squid works equally well on an ethernet-over-usb connection so why do you want dial-up?

I will actually look into that. Creating a 4G proxy as not an easy task and to be honest I don't really know what I am doing yet. I saw a guide that this is with WVdial so I wanted to follow that guide. But TBH I am pretty sure there are other ways to do this.
Thanks !

OK so I replaced the current model for a e3372. I reinstall usb-modeswitch but I still get the same problem.l

lsusb shows :

Code: Select all

Bus 003 Device 015: ID 12d1:14dc Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
but dmesg shows:

Code: Select all

[ 784.860099] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
WVdialconf also detects no modem.

Is the device configured or a modem now or not ? why don't I see a GSM modem message in dmesg as before ?

Thanks a lot.

E3372 is an E8372 without wifi but as I said most 4G modems do only have the ethernet-over-usb function due to 4G higher speed than dial-up can cope with. 25 Mbit/s or there around is the limit for ppp diasl-up, that is not a 4G speed.

If you are using the latest usb_modeswitch (2.52) and you are lucky then it might work to switch this modem into an old dumb slow ppp dial-up modem by enabling HuaweiAltModeGlobal in /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf

The Huawei modems E3272 and E3372 do not provide a PPP port anymore in the alternative mode, only a serial DIAG port and an NCM interface (optimized Ethernet flavour).
It's likely that newer ones follow that path.

Have you got your E3372 to work, and if so how ?

I ask because I seem to have run into the same problem.

Ensure that the USB cable you are using to connect the Huawei modem to your computer is in good condition and securely connected to both the modem and the computer's USB port.

It seems like you're encountering an issue with your Huawei E8372h-153 modem not being recognized as a modem in Ubuntu after 2048 switching back from Windows. This can happen due to the device's mode-switching behavior and how the system identifies it.

Huawei E8372h-153 may not be supported by your operating system or software. Check the manufacturer's list of supported devices Suika game for more information.

Ensure that the USB Modeswitch rules are correctly set up. The rules are usually located in the /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/ directory. Double-check that the rules for your device are present and accurate. You can refer to the official USB Modeswitch documentation among us or community forums for guidance.

Check USB mode switching configuration: Verify that the USB mode switching configuration for your Huawei modem is correct. You can find the configuration files in /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/wordle. Ensure that there is a configuration file specific to your modem model (12d1:1f01 in this case) and that it is correctly configured to switch the device to modem mode (12d1:14dc).
