Attempting to setup E5372s-32

Hello,

I'm attempting to get an internet connection from this Huawei modem, i've tried adding it to nmcli but it doesn't recognize the ttyusb0/1/2 as a broadband modem, ifconfig -a doesn't list the interface. I tried following some guides online but i didn't manage to get a interface or gsm connection to this modem. I've seen some people with similar stats getting a connection through but i think i'm missing something at this point, could someone point me in the right direction?

Previously i had flashed a firmware which appeared to have changed the ID to 12d1:14fe which was detected as a ethernet interface but because it kept rebooting i flashed the stock back. Unfortunately the stock firmware doesn't seem to be working with this vendor/product.

12d1:1c05 is not an id that a working E5372 should get, it is a debug id which you have ended up with because something went wrong when you flashed it.
The 3 serial interfaces are for testing, it is possible that the modem function (ttyUSB0) is fully working but you do at least need a ppp dial-up program for creating a connection and creating the ppp0 device which NetworkManager can handle.

It's possible that there is a NCM port exposed in that mode.

Can you post the output of "lsusb -v -d 12d1:1c05" here?

Hey,

Thanks for you help! After Josh reply i went to flash the firmware again and this time it is loading the id 12d1:1506 which is creating a ethernet interface. I was wondering if you could help me with another issue, when i plug the device the interface shows up as wxx0c5b8f279a64. With it i can either set a static IP or fetch one from the device through dhclient and that's fine but when i boot the system the interface does not appear. I need to remove the device and plug it back in in order to get that interface again.

during boot the drivers being loaded on all ports is usbfs while when i re-plug the device i get:
Driver=option
Driver=huawei_cdc_ncm
driver=usb-storage
driver=usb-storage

Is there a way i can force the right drivers or is this related to the mode switch?

The internal battery is charged via the USB so if you get lots of USB disconnects then it is probably your clients USB port that can not provide enough current for charging the battery so the USB port may power down temporarily due to over-current.
Use a USB3 port (max current 900mA) instead of USB2 (max current 500mA) if you can.

It is not clear from your description what happens at boot, show me the part of dmesg where the E5372 is first detected, the driver loading should follow almost immediately afterwards. Where do you see usbfs being loaded as drivers?
The cmd usb-devices displays the interfaces and the drivers being bound to them, it should either show the drivers you have listed above or show none. I've never seen usbfs listed as bound to an interface.

Is your hardware a RaspberryPi? Which kernel version are you on?

ah, i see now the device is supposedly disconnected but the usb-devices/lsusb is still detecting it. After running a usbreset 12d1:1506 it comes back.

Hmm, the network interface seems to be set up nicely during boot. Not sure what the problem is.
It's correctly detected as a NCM device with Huawei-specific flavour, and a network interface is created (see last line in excerpt).

However, starting the connection is sort of a hybrid process. It uses AT commands that are either transmitted through a serial port (bulk transfer) if available or as control transfer to the first endpoint of the network port union. The latter is exposed by the driver, in your case /dev/cdc-wdm3.

Only after the connection is enabled by the AT command (AT^NDISDUP), the DHCP request can be started.

Reasonably current versions of Network Manager know how to handle this, but it's not hard to create DIY scripts that can do the same.

Hey!

I think i just found the cause of the problem, i setup proxmox on this system and i'm trying to hook all the network to a PFSense VM. the modem was setup as well and i think the KVM kept attaching it as a storage device causing the device to stop working as a network device. I notice this because i rmmod usb-storage and went to check dmesg there was several msgs from kvm about not being a ble to work with the device. I then stopped the VM and rebooted, the modem is now working properly

Here is an indication of something very wrong, reboot doesn't start your system from scratch. Your built-in Ericson modem is assigned cdc-wdm2 and the Huawei modem cdc-wdm3 and this can only be because cdc-wdm0 and cdc-wdm1 are already in use.
How can they be in use after a kernel start from scratch?

You have found a workaround, I can't help you further. This is way above my paygrade and not usb_modeswitch related.

Edit: Didn't see your last post before I made this one, proxmox is surely the reason for the strange behavior.
It explains why you got usbfs as driver, this only happens when the driver is not a kernel driver but is a userspace driver.
