FRITZ!WLAN Stick AC860 switches very slowly

Post by nestodobro » 12 Nov 2021, 17:31

Hi everyone,

I'm using the wifi adapter FRITZ!WLAN Stick AC860 from AVM on my Linux Mint 20.2 machine and it always takes very long (between 3 and 6 minutes, usually) to switch from the CD-ROM mode to the adapter mode. I can make it faster by manually ejecting the CD-ROM, but the delay is still very weird. Is there any way to speed up the switching process?

I've enabled the logging as described in the Troubleshooting chapter and this is the output:

Code: Select all

I see from your log that this is a usb_modeswitch version where parts has been rewritten by Ubuntu developers, they have tried that for almost ten years and every version of theirs has introduced new bugs.

Your log says that "Device is in install mode.", that is what it should be for usb_modeswtch to switch it.
It is followed by "No access to interface 8. Exit" and this is wrong, a bug in their rewritten code.
They are searching for interface 8 and I'm quite sure there is no interface with such a high number in your dongle so usb_modeswitch will exit when not finding it. No switching taking place!

There may be an updated Mint/Ubuntu usb_modeswitch version with this bug fixed, if not then file a bug report to Mint or Ubuntu bugtracker.
Another alternative is downloading the proper usb_modeswitch source from https://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/ and compile it on your computer.

Yes, the Ubuntu package seems to be useless. Filing a bug report unfortunately isn't of much use when you use Mint because it is based on the LTS version of Ubuntu and so has an older version of usb-modeswitch (2.5.2).

I've installed the packages from Debian stable (https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/usb-modeswitch and https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/us ... witch-data) now and it works great. Thanks for your help.
