Huawei E5220 and E353

Post by StrikeFIN » 05 Apr 2015, 02:04

I'm not able to connect with either of these Huawei USB modem.

Both are detected, but somehow I'm not able to connect network (I can create new mobile broadband network connection, but cannot use connection)

Same problem with Ubuntu and Linux Mint latest versions.

What makes you think this is a usb_modeswitch problem?

Obliviously, modeswitch will let Huawei modem to be used as network and not as usb storage. What else I can say about problem to get help and let use linux with networking.

usb_modeswitch does only switch the dongle into modem mode, usb_modeswitch is not a connection manager.
I am therefore curious to learn why you think this is a mode switching problem and not a linux driver or NetworkManager problem.

You could start with telling which linux kernel version and usb_modeswitch version you are using.
version = number. "latest" is not a number.
Then do the lsusb command with the modem connected and give me the displayed usb id for the modem.
It will start with 12d1

I cannot update kernel or other updates, because I cannot access to network. I think problem is outdated linux kernel and outdated USB_ModeSwitch, but I cannot update them without network.

I could try new version of Ubuntu, when it comes out in this month.

Ubuntu 14.10

Kernel: 3.16 (default)
USB_ModeSwitch: 2.1.0 (default)

Linux Mint 17.1

Kernel: 3.13 (default)
USB_ModeSwitch: 2.1.0 (default)

Huawei E353
ID 12d1:14fe Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
Huawei E5220
ID 12d1:1506 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

Your E5220 has switched mode, 12d1:1506 is a usb id containing modem interfaces.
It is likely that the usb id for E5220 before switching was 12d1:14fe, same id as you have for E353.
It is also likely that E353 would get the 12d1:1506 usb id after it has been succesfully switched.

Hard to say why only one of your 2 dongles switched mode but it could be that switching is unreliable if the modem is present when booting the system but works if the modem is plugged in after system has finished booting.
