Probably not a problem of the driver, but it does not matter if you can't use your stick after the preparation.

I don't have a Nexus 10, but in following this development my two cents is that this is not the end of the world here. Josh already mentioned custom kernels, and while I'm sure that he's right in saying it's not as easy as putting files in folders, having a Nexus device makes it a lot easier. Especially considering devs creating tools to help the rest of us fix our devices much more easily. One such tool I'm sure any Nexus device owner is familiar with is the awesomely user-friendly Nexus Root Toolkit by Wugfresh. NRT and some online reading can help you go far (and yes they can also go far in the wrong direction, so use caution - tread carefully, make a (Nandroid) backup).

dtg7,

First: I fear that other manufacturers will follow Google's example.

Second: I certainly cannot recommend to PPP Widget's users to switch their kernels, and I cannot provide any kernels. So everyone will be on their own which is sad and frustrating.

Sure, the technically more savvy will find a way, but hardly the everyday users ...

If you can root your device, flashing a new kernel should not be an issue. If you have a Nexus device, flashing stuff is almost encouraged.

Josh I completely agree with your two points. I merely gave my two cents on the subject because the thread seemed to end on a helpless note.
With regards to your first point, I fully get that it must be annoying to devs such as yourself for Google to do something like this, and as users this should concern the rest of us too. But when I said I don't think it's the end of the world I meant in this one particular case regarding PPP Widget users with first gen Nexus 10 on JB 4.3.

With regards to your second point, I fully understand why you wouldn't want to suggest to your users to mess with their tablets. In fact, the best thing about the widget is it doesn't need much to work. But if a ppp widget user with N10 on 4.3 really didn't want to give up on using the widget or reverting to 4.2.2, his fellow users can point him in the right direction. And I'm not saying this being any more tech savvy than most here, far from it, but I'm pretty good at following directions, and that was my point - with a Nexus device, NRT, and ability to read and follow directions, even a guy like me can fix the issues with his device.

Btw my preliminary googling might have found a solution to the issue in this thread, although since I don't have a N10 I can't test it. Anyone not having any luck with their own googling but wants to try flashing with NRT, ask and I'll write it out.

I have tried BlueVPN before, mostly before I discovered PPP Widget. Back then there was no support for usb modem, just your phone over bluetooth. BlueVPN+ seems to have added that functionality. Anyway, it worked pretty good but the problem was (and they mention this on the play store page) many apps can't access the vpn so can't use the internet connection. It was limited that way. PPP widget's connection on the other hand can be seen by every app.

But I agree it is a viable option in this case. Nexus 10 users on 4.3 should probably try it first before resorting to flashing with NRT, see if it's good enough.

Is the USB modem support based on the kernel drivers (usbserial/option)? Then it will likely go away as well ...

I bought BlueVPN+, it makes a connection but my modem just turns off after a couple seconds/minutes. So now I just bought a 3g Mifi router on ebay. I seen on XDA these work okay. You plug your dongle/modem into it and it creates a wireless hotspot.

These mobile hotspots will be the only viable solution for bringing mobile data to Wifi-only Android devices if the USB way is blocked.

Nexus 10 owners life might have just gotten easier.

At the bottom under No loadable modules?, he has recompiled the 4.3 kernel with support for module loading. It would be very easy for someone to use Wugs Nexus Root Toolkit to flash the kernel he has posted.

As I understand this is good news.
I hope that Josh tells us how to go further - to flash kernel or perform other manipulations.
