0af0:7381 web'n'walk expresscard V

Post by sluckau » 08 Mar 2010, 00:49

Hello,

I'm trying to get a the UMTS Card "web'n'walk expresscard V" (with USB ID: 0af0:7381) running under OpenSuse 11.1 with kernel 2.6.27.45-0.1-pae.

I have deinstalled the old usb-modeswitch version 0.9.x, because of the card with usb id 0af0:7381 has been detected as zeroCD at first time.
Then I have installed the current version according to the instruction:
http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswit ... ml#install

usb-modeswitch-1.1.0, usb-modeswitch-data package and /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf

Following libusb packages are installed on my system:

Code: Select all

libusb-0_1-4-0.1.12-139.1.1
libusbpp-0_1-4-0.1.12-139.1.1
libusb-1_0-devel-0.9.3-4.20
libusb-devel-0.1.12-139.1.1
libusb-1_0-0-0.9.3-4.20
libusb-0_1-5-0.99.9.2-7.6
libusb-1_0-debuginfo-0.9.3-4.20
libusb-1_0-debugsource-0.9.3-4.20
After plugging the card will be detected as "Globetrotter HSUPA Modem" by Manufacturer: "Option N.V." and listed:
lsusb|grep "0af0:7381"

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 016: ID 0af0:7381 Option
But no ttyUSB device has been created. And couldn't be found in "ls /dev/ttyUSB*".

The messages logfile "/var/log/messages" shows the card has been detected successfully and usb-modeswitch has switching 0af0:7381 (Option N.V.: Globetrotter HSUPA Modem):

Code: Select all

Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu kernel: usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 15
Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu kernel: usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu kernel: scsi8 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu kernel: usb 1-2: New USB device found, idVendor=0af0, idProduct=7381
Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu kernel: usb 1-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=4
Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu kernel: usb 1-2: Product: Globetrotter HSUPA Modem
Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu kernel: usb 1-2: Manufacturer: Option N.V.
Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu kernel: usb 1-2: SerialNumber: Serial Number
Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu kernel: usb-storage: device found at 15
Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu kernel: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Mar 7 22:54:01 linux-slu usb-modeswitch: switching 0af0:7381 (Option N.V.: Globetrotter HSUPA Modem)
Therefore I had a look into "/var/log/usb_modeswitch_1-2:1.0" after I have changed /lib/udev/usb_modeswitch to enable logging. The card has been detected successfully and it looks like I have correctly installed usb-modeswitch-1.1.0, but nevertheless mode switch has failed:

There might be a bug in the success check logic.

Can you try this alpha code?

Just replace the old .c and .h files and "make install".

Hello,

thanks a lot for your quick response and support.

I have installed the new code.

Code: Select all

linux-slu:/home/slu/downloads/usb-modeswitch/usb-modeswitch-1.1.1alpha # ls
40-usb_modeswitch.rules Makefile usb_modeswitch.1 usb_modeswitch.d
ChangeLog README usb_modeswitch.c usb_modeswitch.h
COPYING usb_modeswitch usb_modeswitch.conf usb_modeswitch.sh
linux-slu:/home/slu/downloads/usb-modeswitch/usb-modeswitch-1.1.1alpha # make install
gcc -Wall -l usb -o usb_modeswitch usb_modeswitch.c
install -d /usr/sbin
install --mode=755 ./usb_modeswitch /usr/sbin
install --mode=755 ./usb_modeswitch.sh /lib/udev/usb_modeswitch
install -d /etc/usb_modeswitch.d
install --mode=644 -t /etc/usb_modeswitch.d ./usb_modeswitch.d/*
install --mode=644 usb_modeswitch.1 /usr/share/man/man1
mkdir -p /lib/udev/rules.d
install --mode=644 40-usb_modeswitch.rules /lib/udev/rules.d
if [ `which udevadm 2>/dev/null` ]; then \
                UDEVADM=`which udevadm`; \
                UDEVADM_VER=`$UDEVADM -V 2>/dev/null`; \
                if [ -z $UDEVADM_VER ]; then \
                        UDEVADM_VER=`$UDEVADM --version 2>/dev/null`; \
                fi; \
                if [ $UDEVADM_VER -gt 127 ]; then \
                        $UDEVADM control --reload-rules; \
                else \
                        $UDEVADM control --reload_rules; \
                fi \
        elif [ `which udevcontrol 2>/dev/null` ]; then \
                `which udevcontrol` reload_rules; \
        fi
Then I have plugged the umts card as well.

Do you think it's a problem of umtsmon now? Because the device files /dev/ttyUSB* are available now.

Thanks a lot in advance for your support.

Hmm, switching seems to be fine now but the right driver is missing. USB_ModeSwitch will load the "option" driver only if no other driver jumps in automatically.

With newer "Option" devices, a different driver is needed. It's already included in newer kernels (since 2.6.27) but might be missing on your machine.
Look for the "hso" module (modprobe -v hso). If you don't find it in your distribution/kernel, see the doc page in paragraph "Known working hardware". In the remark about "Option" devices, there are links to the HSO site.

Hello everyone.
I know, this thing is from the stone age and yes, I am using a stone age card on stone age hardware (IBM X30) with a stone age dustro (Xubuntu 16.04.7).
So when I try to run "usb_modeswitch -I -W -c 0af0.7381" (yes, I named the file after the USB), it returns
...
Look for target devices ...
...
Found USB ID 0af0:7381
Vendor ID matched
...
No devices in default target mode or class found
Look for default devices
...
Found USB ID 0af0:7381
vendor ID matched
product ID matched
target class ff matches
device not counted, target class reached
...
No devices in default mode found. Nothing to do. Bye!

If I run the thing with any other target class, it complains, that the card is not in class 8 and therefore can do nothing. Worth to note, that all of this happens even after inserting or a fresh reboot. So why is it already in 0xff, and if this is perfectly fine, how to get the ttyUSB* devices?

(I am not that super brain in Linux, however I usually get somehow to the point, that I can use it for whatever I want to do. The previous posts were a bit difficult for me to follow, as only the outputs of the commands were posted, but not the command itself, which took me quite a while to figure them out)

Are you sure that usb_modeswitch hasn't run already after you inserted the device?
Check the output of "dmesg" repeatedly immediately after plug in.

As for the interfaces created, the information in this thread applies. You won't get ttyUSBx but ttyHSx, provided that the "hso" driver module is present. See my post right above yours.
